A Skill Your Kids Will Love to Learn
Swimming classes for kids are extremely popular, and with good reason. Not only does swimming instruction make a child less likely to drown, but swimming is just plain fun! Here, we'll review several important aspects of learning to swim, as well as the best classes for your child.

The Earlier, the Better

Experts agree that the sooner a child is exposed to water, the better chance they have of becoming strong, confident swimmers. Swimming classes for kids are available for all age levels, starting as early as a few weeks of age. However, it is vitally important to remember that a child should never be left unsupervised near any depth of water. The risks are simply too great.

According to the American Association of Pediatrics, a child should not be enrolled in swimming classes on their own until they are four or older. Children younger than four just can't be trusted to follow the basic instructions which keep them safe. However, many swimming classes for kids are aimed at much younger children, and include the presence of a parent. These classes are considered safe at any age, provided that the parent is in the pool and maintains contact with their young child at all times.

Some experts believe that children are born knowing how to swim, and that introducing a baby to water extremely early is beneficial in retaining this instinct. Instinctively or not, most parents report that children who are introduced to water early have less fear or it and go on to become better swimmers. Remember to keep in physical contact with your young child anytime they are in the water, and to watch them extremely closely around a pool, pond, or any body of water.

Specialized Classes

There are many different types of swimming classes for kids. Classes for babies and parents are only one example. After the age of four, a child is considered mature enough to follow directions and pay attention to the instructor. Therefore, they're ready for swimming classes for kids aimed at their particular age group and skill level.

Be sure to speak to the instructor before enrolling your child in any swimming class. Not all classes for preschool-age children, for example, are the same. Some children at this are have been in the water their entire lives, while others may have only dipped their toes a few times and might actually fear the pool. Speaking with the instructor will ensure that the class is geared toward your child's age and skill level.

Basics classes are generally swimming classes for kids who are comfortable with the water but who lack basic swimming skills. They will be taught how to breathe properly while swimming, as well as a few basic strokes.

Swimming classes for kids who are afraid of the water are very popular. Many children, especially those who haven't been swimming long, are literally terrified of swimming pools or water of any kind. These children need special classes which address their fears. Classes for fearful children introduce kids to the water very gradually. Some instructors ask for parents to become involved, while others feel it's best for children to learn independently. Either way, these classes make every effort to overcome a child's fear while teaching them basic water safety. Once they're comfortable in the water, more traditional swimming instruction begins.

Evaluate your child's level of maturity and water comfort before enrolling them in any swimming classes for kids. This simple step can make the difference between a frightening experience and a fun activity your child will love!
